Corruption and bribery on decrease in Nizhny Novgorod region

According to residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region, they had to come across  corruption at medical, police and educational institutions most often. The data were obtained as a result of the first anti-corruption monitoring conducted by the region's Chamber of Commerce. Public opinion showed that the level of corruption in the region has been decreasing.

There were over 2,000 respondents participating in the research. As many as 9.6 percent of Nizhny Novgorod region residents indicated that in 2012, they came across unscrupulous officials. This index is four times lower in comparison with the previous research conducted in the region in 2010.

The monitoring was conducted to study the level of corruption in the region, identify the most corruption-prone structures. As a result, 24 percent of respondents named personal benefits and low wages as the prime cause for bribery. Sixteen percent said that it was the fault of bureaucracy and imperfect legislation.  About 10.5 percent of respondents believe that there is simply not enough control on the part of the authorities. 8.5 percent of Nizhny Novgorod residents explain bureaucratic crime with a desire to solve their problems with the help of illegal remuneration.

According to respondents, most often they come across corruption in the field of health and education and police. Other corruption-intensive sectors are public utilities, courts, and prosecutors.

According to the results of the research, the population of the region shares a positive attitude to anti-corruption measures taken by the government of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

A research conducted by Indem Fund showed that the Nizhny Novgorod region has dropped from the third to the 64thposition on the level of corruption among Russian region since 2005.
