In Nizhny Novgorod, new subway station to be built for 2018 World Cup fans

The construction of a new metro station called Strelka in Nizhny Novgorod is to begin in February 2015.

The new station will be located within a walking distance from the stadium, which will be built in preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The station will provide fast and comfortable transportation both from the Moskovsky Railway Station and other areas of the city. During major sports competitions, passenger traffic at Strelka metro station will reach 25-30 thousand passengers a day.

Preparations are already underway. The new station is to be launched in operation in the first quarter of 2018.

"According to the plan, this line should connect the "bedroom" district of Mesherskoye Lake and suburbs of the Kirovsky direction with other parts of Nizhny Novgorod to ensure a significant increase in passenger traffic of the subway system - up to 25%, and up to 47% - during sports competitions. Thus, estimated passenger traffic of the new station during the FIFA World Cup will make up 25-30 thousand passengers a day," said General Director of ISU GUMMiD, Yuri Garanin.

The journey time from Moskovskaya to Strelka station will be about two minutes. As for the architectural design, it is planned to use a football theme. Special equipment for physically challenged groups of people is envisaged in the project as well.

Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod region Governor Valery Shantsev said that in medium term, four metro stations will be built in the city.
