On Monday an emergency situation interrupted the work of pipe-lines in the Samara Region, Tatarstan, the Volga area, the Russian Emergency Ministry's press service reported on Tuesday. Gas self-ignited after a local gas pipe-line got disrupted 3.5 km south of Samara. The affected section of the pipe-line was automatically barred and all remaining gas had burnt out. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Five suburban settlements of Samara with the population of 30,000 have been cut off from gas supply. Emergency repair work is underway. In Tatarstan near Chistopol a tractor supposedly cut off a pipe-bend of the main pipe-line Nizhnekamsk-Nizhny Novgorod during a fallow ploughing. This elbow connects a local petroleum base with the main pipe-line. As a result, ten tons of diesel fuel leaked out of the pipe to the soil and the Kilevka and the Kama rivers; the total polluted area in the Kama made up approximately 15,000 square kilometres. By this moment the disruption has been liquidated.
