Monument to Chechen women who killed Russian soldiers unveiled

At the entrance to the village of Hangash-Yurt in the Gudermes district, a monument to Chechen women has been unveiled. The monument was erected  in honor of the women, who killed Russian soldiers during the War in the Caucasus in 1819.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov opened the monument. According to him, it is women, who play an important role in the preservation of peace and harmony. "The well-being of the region depends on how mothers raise the younger generation," Kadyrov said.

In 1819, according to historians, after a fierce battle, Russian troops captured a large number of people, including 46 young women. When the prisoners were being transported across the Terek River, near Hangish-Yurt, the girls started to throw themselves on the guards, falling into the river with them. The women thus took revenge for the residents of the village of Dadi- Yurt, which had been burned at the order from General Alexei Ermolov.
