Russia marks 80 years of Boris Strugatsky

April 15th 2013 marks the 80 anniversary of one of the most famous Soviet writers, Boris Strugatsky. The famous science fiction writer died a few months before his birthday: he died on 19 November 2012.

Strugatsky brothers discussed the idea of working together in letters from 1952. After Arkady Strugatsky' novel "Bikini Ashes" was published, the elder brother convinced Boris that their work, which they could write together, would have a chance to see the light. co-written and can go into the light. Arkady and Boris Strugatsky published their first book in 1959 - it was the "Country of Purple Clouds."

Since 1956 and before Arkady Strugatsky's death in 1991, the brothers had written 26 novels, plays, short stories and journalistic works. Their books have been translated into 42 languages ​​in 33 countries. Eight feature films have been filmed on the basis of Strugatsky brothers works. Such well-known Russian directors as Andrei Tarkovsky ("Stalker"), Konstantin Bromberg ("Magicians") and Fyodor Bondarchuk ("Inhabited Island"), were involved in those projects.

This year will see the publication of the first few volumes of the most extensive collection of works of Strugatsky brothers. The 30-volume collection will include correspondence, diaries, notes, as well as previously unpublished texts. In addition, a team of scholars, who study the works of Strugatsky brothers, discovered a translation of the book by Rudyard Kipling "Stalky and the Company."

Boris Strugatsky was born on April 15, 1933 in Leningrad. In 1954, he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Leningrad University as a "stellar astronomer." He worked at the Pulkovo Observatory of the problem of the origin of double and multiple stars.
