American scientists have possibly come up with a breakthrough in the fight against AIDS – a vaccine which so far has produced promising results in tests on monkeys. 23 out of 24 monkeys injected with the vaccine showed a significantly lower viral load than members of the control group, a hundred times lower, in fact. The tests were made 20 weeks ago and the animals are still healthy today. These results could prove a significant breakthrough towards the discovery of a human vaccina against AIDS. The monkeys tested already had a high viral load of Simian-Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus, a combination of the Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus and the variant of this in monkeys, Simian Immuno-Deficiency Virus. The vaccine prevented opportunist infections from occurring. This important discovery points towards the future possibility of finding a vaccine which can be used to save the lives of people who are already seropositive, should the same mechanisms result in human beings. The vaccine was developed by scientists at Emory University, Atlanta, USA, together with investigators from the National Institute of Alergy and Infectious Diseases.
