A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shook northeastern Chile in the region of Antofagasta, west of Paraguay border and south of Bolivia, said U.S. seismologists, but Chilean officials said there was no report of eitherr damage or casualties. No tsunami warning was issued either.

A fire in a densely populated part of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka has killed more than 100 people. It began after an electrical transformer exploded, engulfing housing blocks and shops in flames. Firefighters say they have now got the blaze under control, in the old district of Nimtoli.

Cyclone Laila slammed into the south Indian coast on Thursday, battering the region with heavy rains and winds up to 90 kilometers (55 miles) per hour, and uprooting trees and electric lines, officials said.
