Possible US Strikes On Iraq Discussed In Israel

According to Israeli radio, officials of the Defence Ministry and various security services have been discussing in the last few days the possible outcomes of US airstrikes on Iraq, and the likelihood of Iraqi strikes on Israel. The events of a decade ago when Iraq attacked Israel with Scud missiles "in response to the American bombing" are still in the memories of Israelis. Another reason for Israeli concern is the possible refusal by Baghdad to comply with Washington's demand to allow UN inspectors to monitor its military programme. President Bush emphasised in connection with this that if Iraq's leaders refuse to allow the inspectors to resume their work, "soon, Hussein will have to come to terms with the consequences". Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is supposed to inform Americans on the likely Israeli response to Iraqi aggressive actions during his visit to Washington which is to take place soon.
