Ireland: Criminal gang shoots man to death after high-speed chase through Limerick

Following the a high-speed chase Thursday through the western Irish city of Limerick, a criminal gang ambushed and killed a 34-year-old man, police and witnesses said.

The victim, a passenger on a motorcycle being pursued by a gunman in a car, was shot to death after the motorcycle crashed into a parked car and the passenger tried to flee on foot - but encountered another gunman on foot at a crossroads, police said.

Limerick has long been bedeviled by deadly feuding between the city's two family-run gangs. Six people connected to both gangs have been killed in the city since 2001. In September, a 6-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy suffered horrific burns but survived when gang members threw a Molotov cocktail into a car parked outside a rival's home.

Last week, undercover police arrested two men suspected of trying to smuggle an arsenal of weapons - including assault rifles, submachine guns and armor-piercing rocket launchers - to one of the Limerick gangs.
