Nigeria explosions kill at least 118

Explosions in the Nigerian city of Jos have claimed the lives of 118 people, representatives of the the National Emergency Management Agency said.

According to preliminary data, the explosive devices were placed in several cars near the market. The second explosion occurred 30 minutes after the first one, when rescuers arrived at the scene and tried to help the wounded and remove the dead bodies.

As many as 118 bodies have been retrieved from under the rubble, but the death toll may grow, as rescuers continue working.

Radical Islamist group Boko Haram, whose members oppose the Western model of education and strive for the introduction of Sharia law across the country, terrorizes the local population. The group claims responsibility for most of the attacks that occur regularly in the country. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced a a state of emergency in several states of the country a year ago due to the terrorist threat from Boko Haram.
