Kiev believes Moscow downs Ukrainian fighter aircraft

The Ukrainian military can not accept the fact that militia fighters armed with guns and rifles can destroy their best military equipment and hardware. To keep their end up, Ukrainian officials decided to blame Russia for that.

Representatives of the Council for National Security and Defense of Ukraine claim that a Russian military aircraft downed a Su-25 of the Ukrainian Air Force.

"On July 16, at around 19:00 (20:00 MSK) from the Russian side ...a Russian warplane struck a rocket attack on the Su-25 of the Air Force of Ukraine that was performing tasks on the territory of Ukraine," Andrei Lysenko, a representative of the information center of the Council said at a news briefing on Thursday.

Shortly before that, representatives of militia forces said that they had downed two Su-25 fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force. The fighters were attacking positions of  supporters of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk.

One of the planes was shot down from a portable missile system near the settlement of Gorlovki.

Later, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry confirmed the information about the downed attack aircraft. Officials with the Defense Ministry of Ukraine said that the Su-25 was downed from a portable anti-aircraft missile complex in the afternoon on July 16. The pilot performed an emergency landing and remained safe. The plane suffered minor damage and is subject to repairs.
