An outbreak of malaria in the Eastern Provinces of Afghanistan, Nangarhar and Laghman, has claimed 17 lives. According to Health Net International (HNI) data, the number of people infected with malaria, is currently more than 1,500 people including 729 children. The HNI's report stresses that the overwhelming majority of the deaths were caused by a lack of anti-malaria medicines. The disease is spreading very quickly because of the massive migration of the Afghan population caused by the US air strikes. According to the Pakistani English Dawn daily, Abdul Sattar Adhi, a prominent Pakistani philanthropist, has called on the international community to give immediate assistance to Afghanistan. Adhi believes that this winter, hunger and disease may claim millions of lives.
