Sweltering heat kills one in Japan

A man died and 689 were hospitalized in Japan on Sunday as a result of sweltering heat, broadcaster NHK said.

The man who died was doing cleaning works in the open air. He was rushed to hospital with signs of a severe heat stroke, but doctors failed to save him. Five people currently remain in a critical condition in Japanese hospitals.

In many parts of the country, daytime temperatures hit the record high this year on Sunday. For example, in the Japanese capital, the temperature rose to 35.4 degrees Celsius, in Mie Prefecture - 37 degrees, in Ibaraki and Gifu - 36 degrees. Nighttime temperatures did not drop below 25-27 degrees.

Meanwhile, weather forecasts are not comforting for Japan. In the beginning of the next week, in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka and other regions of the central and southern part of the country, daytime temperatures will remain on the level of 34-36 degrees Celsius.
