Thirteen workers have been safely rescued after an explosion on board an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

The blast caused a fire but no oil spill, much to the relief of those still dealing with the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in April.

Coast Guard Captain Peter Troedsson said: "Coast Guard helicopters on scene and vessels on scene have no reports of a visible sheen in the water. There is no report of an evidence of leaks but we continue to investigate and to monitor that situation to make sure that doesn't change." , euronews reports.

According to Mirror, The rig, Vermilion Oil Platform 380, is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy. It had been producing gas and 58,800 gallons of oil a day with storage for 4,200 gallons. It is considered to be a shallow water platform operating at a depth of 340ft, which would make a disaster much easier to cope with than the Deepwater Horizon spill.

A company spokesman said: "Mariner has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident. The cause is not known, and an investigation will be undertaken."
