Israeli Personalities declare support for Palestinian state

Dozens of public figures, intellectuals and Israeli academics have signed a statement supporting the creation of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders, as part of a two-state solution.

Signatories must present it on Thursday (21) in front of Independence Hall in Tel Aviv where the architect of the Jewish state, David Ben Gurion, proclaimed Israel's independence in May 1948.

In this symbolic act, a letter will be read that was signed by its promoters, who will use the opportunity to ask the public to add their signatures to the document.

"The Jewish people appeared in the Land of Israel, where they forged their personality. The Palestinian people appeared in the Palestinian territories, where their personality was forged," reads the text of the letter, whose contents are anticipated to appear Wednesday in local media.

Among the signatories are at least 20 winners of the Israel Prize, the country's most important, which is awarded annually on Independence Day.

The initiative's promoters insist that it is not a matter of a new political plan, but a way of presenting an alternative vision to society as opposed to the official posture of the Israeli executive.
