Russia Develops New Consumer Standard for GM Food

On July 1, Russia may adopt a new government standard on informing consumers about the presence of genetically modified substances in food products. This was announced today at a press conference on 'Corporate control over product additives and genetically modified food products' by Russian Deputy Anti-Monopoly Minister Sergei Dudkin.

Dudkin said that the current government standard was introduced on September 1, 2002 and obliges producers to inform consumers if the level of genetically modified substances in a food product exceeds 5%. The new standard will force producers to indicate the presence of genetically modified content in a food product on the packaging, regardless of the percentage it makes up.
