Indonesian Public Supports Russian Efforts to Thwart War in Iraq

Representatives of the Indonesian public anti-war committee visited on Friday the Russian embassy in Jakarta to express their support of Russia's position on the Iraqi problem.

Russian ambassador in Indonesia Vladimir Plotnikov received the committee delegation comprised of prominent public, political and religious figures from Indonesia.

A leader of the committee, prominent Indonesian publicist Gunavan Mohamad praised Russia's policy aimed at the maintenance of peace in the Middle East and expressed the hope that Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council would thwart the start of a military operation against Iraq.

The Russian ambassador thanked the representatives of Indonesian public for support and said he was sure Russia would persevere with its efforts to settle the Iraqi crisis jointly with the international community within the UN.
