Leonid Kuchma: Some problems in relations between Russia and Ukraine require top level interference

Ukrainian leader Leonid Kuchma believes that in the relations between Russia and Ukraine "there are no secrets," "but there are problems which call for interference at the top level." At the meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia in the Kremlin on Thursday, the head of Ukraine expressed concern that the term "trade war" between Russia and Ukraine had appeared in the press. "Better a poor peace, than any kind of war," said Kuchma, noting that "a little fire" must be extinguished while it is still smouldering.

The Ukrainian president believes that one must look ahead to the future to achieve the main thing -- an increase in trade.

Speaking of the anti-dumping duties Russia had introduced on zinc-plated steel, Kuchma noted that "we must look at the entire complex of issues." He said that Ukraine's export did not suffer. "We have lost markets in Russia, but have found others," said the President of Ukraine.

President Kuchma also said that at today's meeting that the discussion will be focused on political issues and problems of security.

"We are ready for an absolutely open" discussion, said the Ukrainian leader.
