Turkey plan to join EU

Is Turkey preparing to sacrifice Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit in an attempt to join the European Union? A meeting of the main political parties has been called to discuss ways in which Turkey can surpass obstacles and become a member of the EU as soon as possible.

A summit of Turkey’s main political parties is to take place in Ankara on Sunday. On the table is the discussion as to how to surpass obstacles to Turkey’s membership of the EU as doubts are raised as to whether Bulent Ecevit is competent to continue as Prime Minister.

The 77-year-old Prime Minister of Turkey has not appeared in public for a month, a situation which has led to much apprehension in Turkish political circles, as political leaders become impatient to find ways to break through the obstacles posed by the EU for Turkish membership.

Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer called the leaders of Turkey’s six main political parties together to discuss ways in which to speed up the acceptance of Ankara’s application to the EU. Ecevit could be the scapegoat as Turkey endeavours to join the club.
